Do Australia passport holders need a visa for Indonesia?

Australia is on Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival list. It costs IDR 500,000 for 30 days, and you can extend it once for another 30. Apply online as an e-VOA at evisa.imigrasi.go.id or at indonesiavoa.vfsevisa.id, a second channel the Directorate General of Immigration names itself. You can also pay on arrival at a designated bank counter in the airport or seaport immigration area.

You can apply for the e-VOA from 14 days before you travel, and the e-visa site advises doing it at least 48 hours before departure. Each traveler needs their own, babies and children included, and the fee isn’t refunded if the visa goes unused.

There are two ways to the e-VOA, in no required order: after you submit the arrival card, the portal points Visa on Arrival travelers to the VOA, and the e-visa site takes applications on their own. Australia’s Smartraveller describes the same two, and adds that without an e-VOA you can still get a regular VOA “at certain international airports, seaports and land crossings”.

Going to Bali, is the tourist levy part of the visa?

No. Bali charges foreign tourists a levy of IDR 150,000 per person, paid once per trip, and it isn’t part of the arrival card or the visa: pay it on lovebali.baliprov.go.id or at the counters at Bali’s airport and ports. Bali’s government strongly encourages paying online before you go. Australia’s Smartraveller says the same: “The tourist levy is separate from the e-VOA or the Visa on Arrival.”

How do I avoid a fake arrival card website?

Australia’s Smartraveller warns: “Beware of fake websites charging a fee to submit the arrival card. Only use official government sites, which will include ‘go.id’ in the website’s address.” Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration puts it more loosely, saying government sites “often end with .go.id”, and the second e-VOA channel it names, indonesiavoa.vfsevisa.id, is outside .go.id. The arrival card itself is free.
