Do Malaysia passport holders need a visa for South Korea?

No visa. You do need a K-ETA, Korea’s online travel authorization, applied for before you fly, even straight to Jeju. An approved K-ETA means no arrival card. Family members excused from the K-ETA by age file the arrival card instead. The portal says under 17 or over 65, and the Korean Embassy says 17 and below or 65 and above.

Do I need a K-ETA for Korea?

Yes, including on a direct flight to Jeju. The K-ETA portal says travelers from K-ETA-eligible countries “are required to have K-ETA before boarding a Jeju bound flight/vessel from overseas”, and for Jeju and the rest of Korea alike, the e-Arrival Card portal’s Navigator tells Malaysians: “You must apply for K-ETA to enter Korea.”

The Korean Embassy in Malaysia advises applying “at least 1 month prior to your departure”, and says that if a K-ETA is denied, a visa is needed to enter Korea.

On passport validity, the embassy says Korea itself sets “no specific requirement for remaining passport validity” as long as the passport covers your stay. The six months Malaysian travelers hear about is Malaysia’s own rule, printed on the back cover of the passport.

Traveling with children or grandparents?

Children and grandparents may not need a K-ETA. The e-Arrival Card portal’s Navigator says “those under 17 years old and over 65 years old are exempt from K-ETA”, while the Korean Embassy in Malaysia lists those “aged 17 years old and below, or aged 65 years old and above”. Either way, the portal puts people excused from the K-ETA on its list of those who file the e-Arrival Card.

Those with an approved K-ETA don’t file it: for Malaysians, the Navigator adds, “if you have K-ETA, you do not need to submit e-Arrival card when entering the Republic of Korea.” The portal’s FAQ also asks K-ETA holders to keep their purpose of entry and place of stay up to date on the K-ETA website.

Apply for the K-ETA only on www.k-eta.go.kr or in the official K-ETA app. Korea warns of unofficial sites charging a higher fee. Anyone in your family excused from it by age files the arrival card instead: online for free, or on paper at the counter.

The Korea e-Arrival Card: what it means for you

A K-ETA is not a visa, and it is not the arrival card either: the two are separate systems. The e-Arrival Card portal says a K-ETA holder with remaining validity is not subject to it, unless entering on a visa, and asks K-ETA holders to keep their purpose of entry and place of stay up to date on the K-ETA website.
