Do Malaysia passport holders need a visa for Thailand?

No visa to apply for. Malaysia passport holders enter Thailand without one. You file the TDAC within 3 days before arrival, by land or sea as well as by air. The exception is the Border Pass (Malaysia – Thailand): Thailand does not ask for a TDAC from travelers entering on one.

Crossing the land border from Malaysia?

Malaysia issues the Border Pass (Malaysia – Thailand) only to Malaysian citizens born in, or permanently residing for more than a year in, Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, or the Hulu Perak district, and it is valid only for travel to Satun, Songkhla, Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani. Crossing on the pass, you don’t file a TDAC; crossing on your passport, you do.

On the TDAC, choose LAND as your Mode of Travel. The form has no box for the checkpoint, so every land crossing from Malaysia is entered the same way.

Does the twice-a-year land-border limit apply to me?

No. Thailand limits most travelers using its 30-day visa exemption to two land-border entries per calendar year, but the limit does not apply to nationals of Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Singapore.
